Dr. Thomas Bryan Smith received his MS in Criminology from the University of Pennsylvania, and his Ph.D. in Criminology and Criminal Justice from the University of Florida. Funded by the University of Florida’s Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI), he worked as a postdoctoral associate at the University of Florida's Bureau of Economic and Business Research (BEBR). In this role he applied his expertise in network analysis, machine learning, and natural language processing methods to research in a variety of disciplines, including criminal justice, health science, sustainability, and applied mathematics. He is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Legal Studies at the University of Mississippi.
 
As a computational social scientist, his primary research and teaching interests include: criminal and illicit networks; the translation of criminal justice research into policy and practice; sustainability, particularly as it pertains to criminal justice systems. His work has appeared in Journal of Quantitative Criminology, Journal of Criminal Justice, Scientific Reports, Journal of Informetrics, and Globalization and Health.
