New Publication by Dr. Campbell-Montalvo: Cultural Model Change in Kidney Disease Therapy

We are excited to announce a new publication by Dr. Rebecca Campbell-Montalvo, Director of the AQUASS Lab, in collaboration with Dr. Ashutosh Shukla (PI) and his research team, now available in Patient Education and Counseling:

Understanding how patient education affects the process of treatment decision-making: Cultural model change in kidney disease therapy

This study draws on interviews with 42 Veterans living with End Stage Kidney Disease to explore how study-provided education influences treatment decision-making. Framed within cognitive anthropology and the concept of cultural models, the article offers new insight into how individuals’ past experiences and shared cultural contexts shape the stages of thought, behavior change, and emotion involved in choosing a treatment path.

The findings suggest that cultural models offer a more fitting lens than traditional health behavior theories (like the Health Belief Model) when working with Veteran populations, whose shared values and lived experiences significantly influence decision-making. The study also emphasizes the importance of timing patient education strategically, especially for those pursuing home dialysis, to allow for early preparation such as vascular access placement.

This work contributes both theoretically and practically to improving patient-centered care and communication in chronic illness management. Congratulations to Dr. Campbell-Montalvo and the research team!
