Congratulations to Evan-Angelo Butlig, a PhD candidate in the Nelson Lab, on
receiving the Dorothy Benjamin Graduate Fellowship in Alzheimer’s Disease Research from
the USF Health Neuroscience Institute and Byrd Alzheimer’s Center and Research
Institute! This competitive fellowship supports outstanding PhD students conducting
research directly relevant to Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Using human
biofluids and human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived hippocampal organoids, Evan
aims to better understand how illness outside of the brain can accelerate dementia-related
pathology and subsequent cognitive decline.
This one-year fellowship provides $10,000 toward salary coverage and an additional
$2,000 for travel to an Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias conference or workshop,
supporting Evan’s research and professional development in the field of Alzheimer’s
disease. Evan plans to become a physician-scientist dedicated to improving the lives of
patients at risk for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.
