Dr. Timo Rieg is an internationally recognized renal physiologist. His research interest is kidney-specific roles of transporters, receptors, ion channels, and intracellular signaling pathways in renal homeostasis. Dr. Rieg’s goal is to provide new insights into tubular transport, glomerular function, tubuloglomerular feedback, and the role of the kidney in the regulation of electrolyte homeostasis and blood pressure regulation. He is an accomplished researcher with publications in high-impact journals such as Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, Kidney International, Acta Physiologica, Diabetes Obesity & Metabolism, and Clinical Sciences. His research lab has been continually funded by sources such as NIH, VA Merit Review Award, American Heart Association, and the National Kidney Foundation. His national reputation led him to become an Associate Editor for the American Journal of Physiology – Renal Physiology and past Chair of the APS Epithelial Transport Group. Dr. Rieg is also a dedicated mentor and teacher. He has a successful track record of training young scientists (undergraduate, medical student, graduate student, and postdoctoral) and was recognized with a Mentoring Award by the Department of Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology in 2018. He has made significant contributions to improving how the renal system is taught in the pre-clerkship years and teaches medical students several aspects of renal physiology and pathophysiology. He is also the Co-Course Director of the Basic Medical Sciences: Cardiology, Pulmonology, & Nephrology course for MS2 students.
