Grad Student

My name is Javier Areas, and I am a Nicaraguan American that grew up in California. I have dedicated most of my academic career in the medical sciences. I attended the University of South Florida for both my bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and I am currently a PhD candidate. My academic career has been research based focused and have participated in several symposiums. My background is in Cancer Immunology and during my master’s we researched the cytokine expression levels of various immune cells to understand the mechanistic process of pancreatic cancer. Specifically, we were determining the process macrophages polarize and differentiate into subsets that regulate the tumorigenesis. Since then, I have transitioned from Immunology and am currently researching molecular mechanistic pathways of cell death. My overall goal in life is to be a doctor and move into research science to one day have my own lab and teach the next generation of scientists.
