Drs. Nakase-Richardson and Silva serve as the Tampa VA Principal Investigators in the 21-center TBI Model Systems research network comprised of 16 civilian (TBINDSC | Home) and the 5 VA Polytrauma rehabilitation Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) centers funded by NIDILRR and VA. The TBI Model Systems is the largest multi-center longitudinal study of hospitalized traumatic brain injury in the world. Over 22,000 civilians, Veterans, and active duty service members have been recruited for lifetime follow-up and leveraged for newly funded multi-center work by DOD, PCORI, NIDILRR, VA, and NIH. Lab investigators have have led or served on internal committees (Planning, Executive, Knowledge Translation, Data) and special interest groups (Sleep, Disorder of Consciousness, VA Collaborative) to advance the science of those with greater severity of injury. This work has led to numerous scientific publications and knowledge translation products for persons with TBI and their families (Home | MSKTC). Other translational products from this body of work includes guidelines, position statements, and congressional reports on the chronic needs of military TBI (Research at the TBI Center of Excellence | Health.mil).
