Thomas E. Sharp, III
Tom is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology at the USF Morsani College of Medicine and a faculty member of the USF Health Heart Institute in Tampa, Florida, USA.
He earned his Ph.D. from Temple University’s Lewis Katz School of Medicine, where he was supported by an American Heart Association (AHA) predoctoral fellowship. Under the mentorship of Dr. Steven R. Houser, Tom conducted translational research on cell- and pharmacologically based therapies to combat ischemic heart failure in preclinical models. He continued his training as an AHA-funded postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Dr. David J. Lefer at LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. There, he focused on ischemia-reperfusion injury, heart failure, and the development of novel cardiovascular therapeutics, including seminal work demonstrating the therapeutic potential of renal denervation in heart failure.
Tom’s research program is dedicated to uncovering novel mechanistic pathways and therapeutic targets in cardiovascular and cardiometabolic disease. Taking a multi-organ systems approach—with a particular emphasis on heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF)—his work seeks to advance our understanding of disease pathogenesis and pave the way for innovative treatment strategies.
