Shiva Swamynathan graduated with a B.Sc. (Agriculture) degree from the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru, India, an M.Sc. degree in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, India and a Ph.D. in Life Sciences from the Center for Cellular and Molecular Biology in Hyderabad, India, in 1996. Shiva trained as a post-doctoral fellow first with Dr. Guntaka at the University of Missouri-Columbia, MO, and then with Dr. Joram Piatigorsky at the National Eye Institute, NIH, Bethesda, MD. He then worked as an Assistant Professor (2007-2015), and Associate Professor of Ophthalmology with tenure (2015-2023) at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine where he directed the Ocular Surface Development and Gene Expression Laboratory. Shiva joined the Department of Ophthalmology, Morsani College of Medicine, University of South Florida in 2023 as a Tenured Professor, where he directs the Ocular Surface Biology Laboratory.

Shiva has served as an ad hoc reviewer for several journals, Editorial Board Member for 'The Jornal of Ophthalmology' (2014-Present) and 'The Ocular Surface' (2023-Present), a member of several study section panels for CSR, NIH, ARVO Cornea section Annual Meeting Program Committee (2017-2020), ARVO Professional Development Committee (2024-2027) and Lions Club (2011-2023). In his free time, Shiva likes to visit new places, trek and cycle.
